Bernstein appointed FA chairman

Former Manchester City chief David Bernstein has been confirmed as the new chairman of the Football Association.

A surprise nomination by the FA board in December, Bernstein was voted in by the FA Council on Tuesday.

He replaces Roger Burden, who has been acting chairman following Lord Triesman s resignation last May.

Burden initially sought the role on a permanent basis but withdrew his application in December in protest of FIFA s handling of the bid process for the 2018 World Cup.

England suffered a humiliating first-round exit in the FIFA vote, with hosting rights eventually handed to Russia.

A respected businessman, Bernstein was on the board at Manchester City for nine years, during which the club returned to the Premier League, before res…

Bale, Ramsey absences frustrate Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal is frustrated that his Netherlands side will face a Wales team deprived of star players Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey.

The Dutch take on Wales in Amsterdam on Wednesday in their final friendly before their FIFA World Cup opener against Spain on June 13.

However, Real Madrid forward Bale will not play due to a nagging leg injury and Arsenal midfielder Ramsey has been rested.

Van Gaal, who will begin his tenure as Manchester United manager after the World Cup in Brazil, revealed his disappointment at their withdrawals.

I have said to my board (the Dutch FA) that they had to insist on playing against Gareth Bale and Ramsey, but this can happen in football, he said.

I don t know why, whether it is injury or holidays. When it is a holiday I am a l…

AC Milan striker Fernando Torres has insisted the arrival of Diego Costa forced him to leave Chelsea, but believes he made the correct decision in joining the Rossoneri.

The Spain international, 30, completed a two-year loan move to Milan in the summer, and has gone on to score one goal in four Serie A appearances for the club.

I had decided to leave Chelsea, Torres, who joined Chelsea from Liverpool in a £50 million in January 2011, told Corriere dello Sport.

With Mourinho there was a relationship of respect, but the club had bought a new striker.

With the Coach I had spoken often about my future, he wanted me to stay in London. But I needed a new stimulus for my career.

Hoffenheim prodigy Nagelsmann paving the way for young coaches in Bundesliga

Comparing the status of the club to when he first assumed control, Nagelsmann – who has helped revolutionise not only Hoffenheim but the Bundesliga with the introduction of a 6 3-metre videowall to analyse training – added: Boredom is the worst factor, this is a big danger for any well-functioning relationship be this for me as a head coach working together with the players or be this in a private relationship.

There has always got to be that bit of fire. I have a good rhetoric and I can excite groups of people. I already managed to do that in school. You need this gift in order to stand in front of a group of people and to convince them of an idea. You need to be very brave if you want to be a successful head coach – you need to try new things, not be afraid of making mi…
